Health Insurance -- Case Study 1
The question
has been raised several times, is it cheaper for me to get
an individual policy and cancel my group policy. The answer
is a bit convoluted and may sound like I am dodging the question,
but here goes. In some cases it is better to seperate from
the group and get an individual policy. Such cases where the
group has an "overpriced" policy and is passing
on the spending to you the employee, or if your spouse is
really expensive. This only works if you are in fairly good
health and don't go to the doctor at the first sign of a sniffle.
Another
good reason to leave a group policy, is to get into an HSA
if the group isn't participating in one already. An HSA will
help you save for medical expenses in the future.
I must
warn you though, that once you leave group coverage, you most
likely won't be able to re-enroll until the next open enrollment
period.
